Re: Thought 2.15.09

yes its insane    what a good phrase   i just cant seem to stop  this time

A "slip" is sometimes defined as "Sobriety Losing Its Priority." It's when we stop doing the things we did to get sober. It's a return to the insane thinking that somehow this time when we drink it will be different. It is only possible when we lose the gut-level knowledge and certainty that we are powerless over alcohol and that our lives are unmanageable when we use alcohol.

Thought:

How many times have we heard people picking up another desire chip describe how in the period before their "slip" they had stopped going to meetings, stopped working with others, stopped calling their sponsors, and stopped reading their Big Book? How are we doing in terms of meetings, calling our sponsors, working with others and reading the Big Book? What are we doing today to maintain a fit spiritual condition? "Slip" may sound accidental, but isn't it really premeditated?

Affirmation 2/15/09

Today, I will be happy and grateful for what I have.

Aren't we always trying to convince ourselves that we will be happy when: I get that new car… I am in relationship… I retire… get a new job… whatever. Happiness occurs when we are grateful for what we have. It is a journey, not a destination.

A Prayer

God, there are so many decisions to make and I don't seem to know what
is the best for now or for the future. You said if we lack wisdom, all
we need to do ask you. I really need you to pour wisdom into my mind
today. Thank you!

Re: New Sobriety (Relationships)

I'm an old timer, really old timer. Things haven't changed too much because I was told the same thing and actually tried really, really, really hard to comply. However, I needed a few rides to meetings at different times. So two guys in the same car would pick me up. As long as there was someone else in the car it was allowed. But eventually it did pose a problem because my friends (1 of them) and I began to connect emotionally. He or I would say something at a meeting and then we'd discuss it on the ride home. He was 1 1/2 years sober when we met, I was 3 months. And so it began... Then soon I had problems with one of my children (I was a divoroced mom) and he said he'd try to help out and one thing INNOCENTLY grew into another. Well - let's cut to the chase here.... we'll be married 28 years this May. We still make meetings together. But want to know what?... people actually took bets infront of us that we wouldn't last even one year.

I must add though because it is a good practice not to mingle early on in program, that he and I both had had a solid and deep relationship ALREADY established with each owns High Power. We often say how our marriage is so strong BECAUSE we spent two years being good friends first.

We're both sober over 3 decades each.

Listen to your sponsor he only wants the best for you.

as her sister. My sponsor was very upset and doesn't approve of this.
Where does it say in the Big Book that this is not good. I have
nothing to offer a woman in early sobriety. We are the talk of the
Alano Club and we both feel uncomfortable. I feel like i'm in high

Re: KUDZU

What's to believe? We live in a free country here and it's up to the
individual to make his life choices; providing they are legal. The
kudzu worked for me. Doesn't matter, I was just throwing it out there
for topic conversation. Isn't that what the group is about; sharing
life experiences trying to stay sober?

Coldpony, yeah that's funny about the valium. I think there are just

Re: Emmet Fox -- who is he?

While we are on the subject of influences, a very significant one was Sam Shoemaker:

Sam Shoemaker

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Sam Shoemaker, DD, STD (1893-1963), was an Episcopal priest who was instrumental in the Oxford Group and founding principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Sam Moor Shoemaker was the rector of the Calvary Church in New York City, which was the United States headquarters of the Oxford Group. Bill Wilson attended Oxford Group meetings at the Calvary Church and Sam was instrumental in assisting Bill Wilson with the writing of the book Alcoholics Anonymous (nickname: The Big Book). Bill acknowledged this linkage when he wrote in the book, A.A. Comes of Age (page 39):

In 1917 Sam Shoemaker had been sent to China to start a branch of the YMCA and to teach at the Princeton-in-china Program. There, in 1918, feeling discouraged , he first met Frank Buchman who told him of the four absolutes, honesty, purity and unselfishness and love. Later Shoemaker would speak of the meeting as a major influence for the start of his ministry, that being the time when he decided to let go of self and let God guide his life [1]

Bill Wilson, in 1955, would later give credit to Sam Shoemaker whom he referred to as a co-founder of AA.

" It was from Sam Shoemaker, that we aborbed most of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, steps that express the heart of AA's way of life. Sam Shoemaker had given us the concrete knowledge of what we could do about it, he passed on the spiritual keys by which we were liberated. The early AA got its ideas of self-examintation, acknowledgement of character defects, restitution for harm done, and working with others straight from the Oxford Group and directly from Sam Shoemaker, their former leader in America, and from nowhere else."

Rev. Shoemaker wrote over thirty books, at least half of which were circulating before A.A.'s 12 Steps were first published in the Big Book in 1939. Shoemaker's books were circulated in New York, Akron, and the Oxford Group.[2]

Re: KUDZU

Oh! That reminds me! A doctor I once saw told me "alcoholism is the result of a deprivation of Valium in the organism."
When I stopped laughing I realized he was offended: He meant it! He really believed Valium was the natural substance missing in the alcoholic!
Goes without saying I never saw him again, although nowadays I think he might have been trying to defend his own substance dependence...
Figure it! Alcoholism the result of withdrawal from Valium! What a hoot!

That said, I did take kudzu extract, on the advise of my sponsor, when I was several months sober (but before I had started working the steps) on account of cravings because of my—then—inability to handle a huge life transition. Of course, an alcoholic will crave his destroying power—as opposed to his Higher Power—any time he needs the latter.
I took the extract for a while, then I changed sponsor & started working the steps, and I'm still here, one day-at-a-time, having a great life with You and all of you.
Thank you for sharing, Sonya, I get a lot out of your words. Keep coming back.

Re: Anonymous

I agree, and I certainly respect anyone's wishes to be anonymous.
That is their business, and I also respect the AA guidelines. I just
was thinking, when I first decided to go to an AA meeting, I was
afraid someone I knew might see me. Now I am proud that I made the
choice to better my life, just like going to the gym.

Re: Thought 2.12.09

Thanks Bill, I agree with you.

It reminds me of what my first sponsor always said if I complained
about what someone said at a meeting. "We are all powers of example."
My current sponsor says that some of us reach a certain point and then
stop growing. Personally, I want as much recovery and spiritual growth
as I can achieve in this lifetime. This will require continual work on
the steps and seeking in the realm of spirituality.
Best wishes

Up date on tonsil cancer - well I've been through the shit-storm:
completed by 33 sessions of radiotherapy, and 6 weeks of consecutive
chemotherapy. I've come out the other end having lost 30lbs, with no
saliva; a persistent sore throat, especially when I eat; I have to
carry artificial saliva and water with me at all times; I
wake 2-3
times per night with a dry mouth; I can't drink wine, enjoy chocolate
or yogurt, and some other foods taste weird.
But on the other hand I have lost my thrift: I treated myself to a
newish silver 3 series BMW convertible, and tend not to worry when
buying books CDs DVDs, and taking Cath out to dinner, theatre etc.
2 Weeks ago we traveled through the snow to get a CT/PT scan (the one
in Brighton was out of order). The wait has been torturous. Today I
attended clinic to hear the results. I am clear!
Best case scenario I am clear of cancer and can expect to live up to
20 years before the radiation makes its own cancer, or until I get a
new primary. Worst case scenario: I still have cancer but it is either
microscopic, or any tumor is under 1cm in diameter which means that I
can stop obsessing and worrying about my immanent demise - at least
for the foreseeable future.
So there is no other way to
describe this than: great news.

And I can postponed by epitaph based on Boswell's account of Hume's
last day.

Hi Mike...
Where are you in India? One of my homegroup members is leaving tomorrow to come over there...mainly to do some service work, hopefully to help reduce the stigma over alcoholism among the female population.
She'll be working in Mumbai.

Daily Reflection 2/12/09

The Root of our Troubles

Selfishness---self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our
troubles
Alcoholics Anonymous P 62

How amazing the revelation that the world, and everyone in it, can get
along just fine iwth or without me. What a relief to know that
people, places and things will be perfectly ok without my control and
direction. And how rodlessly wonderful to come to belive that a power
greater than me exists separate and apart from myself. I believe that
the feeling of separation I experience between me and God will one day
vanish. In the meantime, faith must serve as the pathway to the
center of life.

Re: KUDZU

I first heard about an 'extract' of kudzu root being used by the
Chinese to stop alcohol cravings; I think it was a short thing in the
Science section of the NY Times, more than 10 years ago. (I shared
with my home group that I didn't know if it worked, but if I had to
hazzard a guess as to how it worked, maybe the prescription was to dig
the roots out -they go down 10-20 feet- and by that time you'd have no
cravings!).

If it works, keep doing what you're doing. There is obviously
something wrong, chemically, with us alcoholics, so if it helps you
may have found an aid to recovery. AA does not claim to have all the
answers, nor the only answer.

One thing I have noticed, any time scientists or doctors found what
they thought was an aid to help alcoholics stop drinking: they still
felt that joining AA (that is, working the program) was the most
important thing.

Re: Anonymous

When I purchased and secured my 2nd drunk driving charge my hubby
suggested I check myself into counselling cuz the Judge was going to
order it anyway. It took me 2 weeks to make that call for an
appointment.. I was so scarred.

The Counsellor there kept suggesting I get to an AA meeting. I kept
forgetting about it. My excuse ... Im from a small town, what if I
see somebody I know ? Her reply ... Oh, okay. So, its alright if
somebody see's you falling off a barstool or see's your name in the
local paper for dui charges then right ?

I have sadly discovered that it is ( or seems to be ) more acceptable
to be seen walking, crawling, or even stumbling in or out of a bar
then it is to be noticed attending an AA meeting.

I am not ashamed or embarrassed anymore. Nor do I run around shouting
that Im a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I believe in our traditions
and think the 12th tradition is of the utmost importance.
I am anonymous when I want to be and carry the message when I need
to.

Thought 2.12.09

Someone once said in a meeting that, "When I came in, they told me to just keeping coming back. And if I worked the steps it would be rewarding to watch me grow, and if I didn't it would just be fun to watch me."

Thought:

Are we rewarding for others to watch us as we grow? Or are we still as miserable as the day we came in? Could there really be a relation between working the steps and feeling better? We are all examples, but are we examples of how to do it or not to do it?

Affirmation 2/12/09

Today, I have complete self-acceptance.

There is always another mountain to climb, a new lesson to learn, another bridge to build, another change to make. Life is a process of creating one thing after another. Release negative old images and let go of fear filled future encounters. Realize that you are a special human being, just like everyone else, and enjoy the feeling of serenity that comes with total self-acceptance.

Re: Big Book

Well Allan, I think you should take a few minutes of your time and find out that AAWS has different ideas.  I am not trying to cause friction, but this distasteful peace of information came to me a few months ago and I too had a hard time believing it.

Again I would encourage you to contact  212-870-3400 & ask for Darlene Smith,
Fax 212-870-3003 or email: smithd@aa.org

I am too a member of the GSO and can not get them to understand. Many others are shocked when they get this verification.

Please call them, Please

It is also my understanding that AA Central does not and is not the

Threating people over distributing the Big Book electronically over
the internet violates the long standing policies of AA..

I have 2 suggestions for you publish the book and all litature  in
ebook format, so iit is available world wide instantly...

the second suggestion is  process the email requesting that I be added

Simply put do your job.  don't harass  people trying to stay sober..
