Even less well known...perhaps because he was liberally "borrowed from" in the writing of "Alcoholics Anonymous" is Ernest Holmes, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Holmes
All of these proceed from a tradition that can be traced back into history...Ralph Waldo Emerson provided much of the original thought in this vein.
